Canupp4Judge – Episode 7

Video Transcript

Hello, this is Brian.

A Kentucky district court judge plays a unique and powerful role in shaping the future of young people, especially when it comes to helping them stay on track to graduate high school.

Every day judges see firsthand how challenges outside the classroom like family instability, poverty, substance abuse, or involvement in the criminal justice system can disrupt a child’s education, but the courtroom doesn’t have to be the end of the road. It can be a turning point through programs like juvenile diversion, teen court, and district court intervention.

A district court judge can hold students accountable while also connecting them with the support they need. That might include counseling, mentorship, tutoring, or access to social services.

When a judge emphasizes education as a priority, it sends a clear message school matters and your future matters. Judges can also collaborate with schools, community organizations, and families to address the root causes of absenteeism and behavioral problems by focusing on clear expectations and having consistent follow through they can help students stay engaged in moving forward.

There’s also a broader impact. When young people graduate, they are far more likely to become self-sufficient, employed, and contributing members of the community. My goal is to help guide these students toward becoming future taxpayers, individuals who are building careers, supporting families, and strengthening our local economy.

Rather than having individuals who remain caught in cycles that place ongoing demands on public resources. Most importantly, a judge can offer something many at-risk youth lack consistency, structure, and a belief in their potential. A few words of encouragement from the bench paired with firm expectations can make a lasting impact in this way, a district court judge is more than a legal authority, they’re a community leader helping guide young people toward graduation and a brighter future.

Thank you.
