Hello, I’m Brian Canupp.
After 25 years of practicing law, including seven years as a prosecutor in Nicholas and Harrison counties, I know that being a judge is about trust.
Common sense says that trust starts with keeping money out of the equation.
That’s why I’ve directed my campaign committee not to accept donations from attorneys who will be practicing law before the 18th Judicial District.
If you have a case before my court, I don’t want your money. Plain and simple.
Now, I need to be clear: this isn’t a knock on the local bar.
We have great attorneys who are ethical and would give money out of a sense of civic pride. I’ve worked with them, and I respect them. But I’ve learned it’s important to avoid even the appearance of impropriety.
I don’t want voters wondering if a ruling was about the law or if it was about a donation.
I’m taking that off the table.
My obligations will be to the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of the Commonwealth, the laws of Kentucky, and to the people of this district.
A fair court means no conflicts.
The law applies equally to everyone, and that’s just common sense.
