Canupp4Judge – Episode 1

Video Transcript

This Brian. Uh, this is the first of my vlogs where I’m running for running as a candidate for district judge in the 18th Judicial Circuit. Excited to get on here and uh vlog for a minute or two about um things that that I see are a concern to me and and a concern what I think should be a concern to our whole community. Um, I intend to do these regularly as we go through the campaign. Um, it’s I think it’s important for you to know what uh what concerns me, what’s happening in our courtroom, what’s happening at the justice center. So, as you decide who you’re going to vote for and the vote you’re going to cast, you’ve got as much information as you can get. Today’s topic that I want to bring up is driver’s licensing. Um, in the last four years, we’ve gotten ourselves in a position where our driver’s licensing has all gone to a regional uh licensing center for our counties, which are Pendleton, Robertson, Nicholas, and Harrison counties. We don’t have a driver’s licensing center in any of our counties. In order to get your driver’s license, you’ve got to pack up. You’ve got to head to Covington. You’ve got to head to Newport. You’ve got to head to Mazeville, you’ve got to head to Frankfurt, or you got to go to Lexington. That’s gotten to be a real pain in the butt. And I say that because it used to be that you could go and get your driver’s license renewed on a long lunch. If you had a kid who was taking their driver’s test to get their permit, you could take a an hour or so off work, come down, drive them down, sign off on the paperwork, and get it done. And it was the same thing when it came time to get the driver’s test done. Now you’re looking at taking a day to a half day off work, driving at least 45 minutes to an hour to get to a testing site, trying to get yourself on the web page, trying to compete with other people who’ve got issues. It’s just gotten really difficult. The problem that I’m seeing in the courtroom is is that we’re trying to hold people accountable for not getting driver’s licenses, but there not enough slots for folks to get their testing done or to do do the written test or do their driver’s test. They just can’t get it done. So, it’s difficult to hold folks accountable when they’re out here driving without a driver’s license. So, as folks come knocking on your door and asking for your vote, one of the things I would ask you to mention to them is what’s your stance on bringing the driver’s license offices back to the counties and back to the circuit clerk’s offices. It seems like that would be the best way for our communities to go forward in terms of issuing driver’s licenses. Thank you very much.
