Hello, this is Brian.
One of the questions a district judge must answer every day is pretty simple:
When does somebody deserve a second chance, and when is enough enough?
The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to those questions.
People make mistakes, and I believe that when someone takes responsibility, learns from their mistake, and is willing to do the work to get back on the right path, sometimes a second chance is exactly what they need.
But a second chance doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences. And it doesn’t mean a third, a fourth, or a twentieth chance will automatically follow.
That’s where experience, good judgment, and common sense come into play.
A district court judge needs to listen, look at the whole situation, follow the law, and treat every person who walks into the courtroom fairly.
To me, that’s what justice is about: holding people accountable, giving people a second chance when it’s appropriate, and making sure our communities are protected, all while applying a little common sense along the way.
